Soft Days by the North Sea with Thilde Irene

“The ocean is my constant reminder that we’re never broken. It can be huge and wild and completely still sometimes, yet it’s always whole.”
AllMatters
Thilde Irene is the creator of UNDA Cycle, a platform where she teaches women an intuitive way of understanding their body’s natural rhythms. Her approach is shaped by the North Sea coast she lives on, where weather, movement and tide set the pace.
This conversation moves through surfing, simplicity, and the quiet ways our internal cycles mirror the tides.

Why is surfing an important part of your life?
It's become a part of my lifestyle because it brings this sort of freedom and everyday joy. It’s a feeling I otherwise only found in the mountains but since Denmark is fairly flat I’ve learned to truly appreciate the ocean and the waves. When I'm out there everything unnecessary falls away, it’s just me, the water and whatever is happening in the exact moment. Surfing keeps me humble, curious, and connected. It’s the constant reminder for me that I’m a part of something larger, and the joy often comes from simply showing up and letting the sea meet me where I am.
"Time in the water teaches me to be with “what is” and trust that things will unfold as they’re meant to. When you’re sitting on your board, you can’t force the waves. You need to read the conditions, feel into them and respond rather than push. That same mindset has moved into my work and daily life."

What has the ocean taught you that you still carry with you?
Patience and trust— absolutely. When I’m sitting and waiting for a wave not every wave is meant for me. Sometimes you can wait a long time for just one, but when it finally comes it’s incredible. The ocean is also my constant reminder that we’re never broken, like, it can be huge and wild the ocean, and completely still sometimes, yet it’s always whole. The same goes for us as people, we need both states to function.

How does time in the water shape the way you make decisions in your work and in your life?
Time in the water teaches me to be with “what is” and trust that things will unfold as they’re meant to. When you’re sitting on your board, you can’t force the waves. You need to read the conditions, feel into them and respond rather than push. That same mindset has moved into my work and daily life, instead of rushing or trying to control every outcome I make decisions with more presence and patience. I trust the timing a little bit more, I listen before I act and I let myself follow the opportunities that feel like the right wave to catch. Rather than chasing everything at once—it’s easier said than done but I keep trying.

How did you first realize your own internal cycle felt connected to tides? Was it a moment, a place, or something your body kept telling you?
I didn't realize it in a single moment. It was more like a quiet echo I began to notice over time. When I spent more hours by the sea something in me softened into its rhythm, so not in timing but in feeling the tides ebb and flow became a metaphor for my own internal shifts. The moments of gathering inward and the moments of rising outward kept reminding me that I too move in patterns— even if they don’t align with the moon or the water, the connection wasn’t literal, it was simply that the sea gave me a language for something I was already living.
What does balance look like for you these days, in the small rituals and the bigger rhythms?
Slow mornings, nurturing meals, time to recharge- whatever it’s a few deeper breaths or journaling, movement on the mat, a dip in the waves. In general, listening to my body and its signals is incredibly important to me—my cycle journaling has become an incredible and invaluable part of my routine because it forces me to spend 2 minutes checking in with myself.
What does simplicity mean to you in practice, not as an aesthetic but as a way of living?
Simplicity to me is the art of letting what matters rise to the surface. It shows up in the way I protect my time, the way I listen to my body and the way I choose to follow the natural rhythms.

How has understanding your cycle changed the way you live?
Understanding my cycle has changed the way I move through my days. Instead of expecting myself to feel the same all the time, I pay attention to the natural shift in energy, emotions and focus. It’s made me kinder to myself, allowing rest when my body asks for it and using my phases to create and connect in other ways. It hasn’t simplified life, but it has made it feel more aligned. I live less by the clock and more by my own rhythms which has made everything feel way more sustainable and for me, living after my cycle has been the greatest gift of all.
